Laurel Oak bulldozer wins at Bendigo

Accelerato had been knocking on the door before bulldozing his rivals by 7 lengths in the Newbridge Hotel Plate (1100m) at Bendigo on Friday.

The Laurel Oak Bloodstock (FBAA) sprinter had been placed in all three outings this year prior to an emphatic victory for Mornington trainer Tony Noonan. “With Super VOBIS and Gold VOBIS bonuses it was worth $51,000,” Noonan said. “Brad (Rawiller) was able to get a sit and get him to deliver a good kick.

“We decided on a change of tactics because he had been over-racing on nervous energy. We’ve worked hard on that at home with good results today.”

Laurel Oak’s Louis Mihalyka bought Accelerato for $140,000 from Newgate Farm at the 2015 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. Fastnet Rock sired him from Dance To My Tune (Stravinsky) who was a Listed winner at Woodbine prior to a Group 1 placing in the Santa Margarita Invitational at Santa Anita.

Mihalyka learned of the Bendigo runaway while stopping over in Dubai on a flight back from Europe. And while he was leading a tour to Royal Ascot, Laurel Oak pocket-rocket Lipizzan won again at Randwick.

Lipizzan tips the scales at no more than 420kg but raced well above her weight in the McGrath Estate Agents Plate (1200m). “She has a heart as big as her body and none try harder,” trainer Gary Portelli said. “She never runs a bad race for Laurel Oak – they bred the horse and I trained her mother, too.

“She is bred to handle the wet being by Sebring by a Commands mare so it’s a good time to have her in. There’s a bit of upside to her and we might see a really handy filly next preparation.”
