Last curtain call for Academy Award

Academy Award, one of the last sire sons of American racing legend Secretariat, was put down at Old Friends retirement farm in Kentucky earlier this week.  He was 24.

His half-sister Good Mood (Devil’s Bag) is the dam of Australian stallion Grand Royale (Danzig).  He stood in Tasmania and Victoria and covered his last book of thoroughbred mares in 2007.  He’s now a polo pony sire in NSW.

Academy Award was a G2 winner of the Manhattan Handicap and spent most of his stud career at Win Row Farm in Ohio.  His best progeny were G1 winners Four On The Floor (Canada) and Mr McCartney (Brazil).
