Kiwi sprinter Smiling in Macau

Highly consistent Kiwi sprinter Luck Of Smiling (NZ) claimed the biggest victory of his career in the LR Macau Sprint Trophy (1200m) on Saturday.

Luck of Smiling (4g Elusive City – Sunshine Gold by Zabeel) went into the Sprint Trophy off the back of an uncharacteristic unplaced effort in May. He had now won 9 races and been placed another 6 times in 16 starts.

Bred by Don and Wendy Pye, he was purchased by Hawkes Racing from Haunui Farm at NZ Bloodstock’s 2009 Karaka Festival Sale for $40,000. Team Hawkes also purchased Luck of Smiling’s half-brother by Pentire at this year’s Karaka Premier Sale for $230,000.

Luck of Smiling is the 17th stakes winner for Elusive City who shuttled to Haunui Farm from 2004 to 2010. He sired G1 winning filly Elusive Wave and his other stakes winners this season include So Elusive, Hinemoa and Jetset Lad.

His Australian based three-year-olds include Adamantium who ran third in the G1 Futurity Stakes and So You Think’s half-brother Now You Know who placed in the G3 Carbine Club Stakes.

Luck of Smiling is the 95th stakes winner for his damsire Zabeel. The Cambridge Stud legend holds extensive leads in both the NZ and Australian Broodmare premierships – his daughters have produced the winners of over $17.70 million in NZ and Australia so far this season.
