Vatuvei raced like a stayer with a future when he led home a NZ Bloodstock trifecta in the Listed VRC St Leger at Flemington on Wednesday.
Vatuvei (3g Reset – Boisterous Lady by Rivotious) had won a Sale maiden in February before finishing third in the Listed Galilee Final at Mornington. He cruised up to the leaders approaching the home turn in the St Leger and then sprinted six lengths clear before being geared down by Luke Nolan at the end of the 2800m marathon.
Fellow Karaka graduates Practiced (Encosta de Lago) and About the Journey (Darci Brahma) filled the placings.
Trainer Peter Moody prepared his first VRC St Leger back in 2004 with NZ bred gelding Desert Clearance (Desert Prince) and he indicated Wednesday’s winner will likely be spelled. “He got to the front a bit too soon but it was a good staying effort,” Moody explained. “He’s a work in progress and has come along at his own speed.”
Vatuvei was a $150,000 buy from Hallmark Stud at the NZ Bloodstock’s 2010 Karaka Premier Sale. He is the 17th stakes winner for Darley sire Reset and is a half-brother to the Arena Group winners Rena’s Lady (G1 AJC Australian Oaks) and Raise (G3 AJC Adrian Knox Stakes).
