NZ Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux is expected to have just one race at home before embarking on another Australian campaign.
Owner-breeder Richard Wood has confirmed the four year-old is likely to race first-up in the G1 Easter Handicap (1600m) at Ellerslie on April 14. He will then head to Sydney for the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick before a possible start in the G1 Doomben Cup on May 19.
“The plan is to run him in the Easter depending on the weight he gets,” Wood said. “We know it will be a fair bit but we are also not prepared to see him carry the grandstand.”
Jimmy Choux (4h Thorn Park – Cierzo by Centaine) was unplaced last time out in the G1 Hong Kong Mile in December. That followed a Melbourne campaign that comprised a close second in the G1 Cox Plate and a troubled fourth in the G1 Emirates Stakes.
Wood said Jimmy Choux was tired when he got home to Hastings from that trip but didn’t spell for too long. “He’s a colt and gets a bit above himself,” Wood explained. “He has been ticking and his fitness level will be right up there when he resumes.”
Jimmy Choux’s sire Thorn Park was a G1 winner of the Stradbroke Hcp before retiring to Windsor Park. His dam Cierzo retired a maiden but second dam Gale (Wild Rampage) was a Listed winner of the Castletown Stakes.
