Italian stallions escape crisis

Former Independent Stallions shuttler Denon will transfer to Haras du Petit Tellier in France for the 2012 northern season.

Denon (Pleasantly Colony) began his stud career in 2005 at Allevamento di Besnate in Italy and shuttled to Victoria for four seasons until 2009.

The Italian racing and breeding industries are in crisis and Denon’s move could be the start of an exodus if authorities don’t solve the current stand-off.  There has been no thoroughbred or harness racing at any of Italy’s 41 racecourses this year and they face ruin unless a radical shake-up is implemented.

Italian MPs from all parties are putting together a plan to help the finances of both industries.

Denon was bred by the Niarchos family and was G1 placed in the French 2000 Guineas and Prix Jean Prat before transferring to North America where he was a G1 winner of the Hollywood Derby, Charles Whittingham Hcp, Turf Classic Invitational and Manhattan Hcp.

Denon is closely related to Australian shuttlers Good Journey and Spinning World.  The best of his progeny includes Italian G3 winner Il Fenomeno who switched to hurdling last year for another G3 success at Navan.

In Australia, Denon has sired 26 winners at a 35% strike-rate.  His sole stakes performer to date has been Adelaide Listed winner Keep Control.
