Huffer (NZ) upset a fellow Group 1 prospect on the way to furthering her own top-flight ambitions at Ellerslie on Saturday.
The Matamata mare confirmed she’s on target for a crack at the G1 Telegraph Hcp at Trentham next month when downing hot-favourite Future King (Encosta de Lago) in a competitive edition of the Lindauer Sprint.
“She’s a lightweight chance in the Telegraph,” trainer Graham Richardson said. “That will bring her rating up and she has improved with every start.”
Huffer (5m Pins – Glitzy by O’Reilly) was originally registered as Sequin by Waikato Stud. She won at Matamata, Paeroa (2) and Te Rapa before her breeders embraced the Social Racing promotion by the Huffer Racing Club this season. Its membership is free and has attracted a fan club of more than 900.
“It’s a great feeling, a great result and great for racing,” Richardson added. “She raced a bit fiercely and was beaten by a handy horse (Open ’N’ Shut) at Te Rapa last time. We took the blinkers off and it was a gutsy, gallant effort.”
Huffer’s dam Glitzy was a LR Rotorua Stakes winner and she has now foaled three winners by Waikato Stud champion Pins. Glintz won five races in Sydney before transferring to Perth and Fabulous November claimed the Griffin Trophy (1400m) in Hong Kong on December 16.
Glitzy had a Pins filly make $100,000 to the bid of Bjorn Baker at the 2012 NZB Premier Sale. She has been named Jarjums. Waikato Stud has catalogued another Pins – Glitzy filly as Lot 161 at the 2013 NZB Premier Sale.
