Unbeaten colt Philippi is within a month of returning for a much anticipated autumn campaign.
Philippi (3c Host – Soorena by Encosta De Lago) completed a winning hat-trick at Flemington in October before trainer Mick Kent tipped him out for a spell. He was a $7 second-favourite for the G1 Victorian Derby when connections called a halt to his spring campaign.
“He’s grown and developed a bit more during the break and I’m very happy with him,” Kent said. “We will probably start him off in the C S Hayes Stakes and then go from there.”
A homebred for Gilgai Park owner Rick Jamieson, Philippi won on debut at Mornington in August and then doubled up at Moonee Valley before claiming the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) at Flemington. “It was his first preparation and he was still raw,” Kent explained. “We’ve been patient and he’s a quality colt – I’m sure he will be even better this time in.”
Philippi is by Swettenham Stud sire Host and his dam Soorena is a winning half-sister to Philda (Secret Savings) who won 12 races in Melbourne. Jamieson bred another Host colt from the mare last September.
The G3 C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) will be run at Flemington on February 16 and Kent has pencilled in the G2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and G2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) as further lead-ups to either the Australian Derby at Randwick or South Australian Derby at Morphettville.

Host (Chi) is among a log-jam of stallions battling for second-season honours in the winners’ category this term. The Swettenham sire has a much better strike-rate than his rivals approaching the half-way point of 2012-13.
