Hillside Thoroughbreds graduate Whispering Brook underlined a dominant day for the Victorian breeding industry in Western Australia on Saturday.
Just hours after Written Tycoon colt Capitalist won the G1 Golden Slipper, Whispering Brook emerged as Perth’s top two year-old filly with a front-running victory in the G3 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m) at Ascot.
The Simon Miller trained youngster is unbeaten in three outings and she started a $2.35 favourite following a last-start victory in the LR Supremacy Stakes. “I was pretty confident she would be hard to beat,” Miller admitted. “She led them up in the Supremacy and again today but she’s even better chasing.”
Whispering Brook (2f Hinchinbrook – Artful Whisper by Machiavellian) is part-owned by Alan and Birgitt McAlister and she will lead the local fillies into the $500,000 G2 Karrakatta Plate on April 2.
The McAlisters bought her as a foal for $45,000 from Hillside Thoroughbreds at the 2014 Magic Millions National Sale. The Serpentine couple also race G1 Winterbottom Stakes winner Magnifisio and last start G2 Blamey Stakes winner He or She.
Hillside Thoroughbreds owners Peter and Areti Arvanitis sold Whispering Brook’s younger half-brother by Medaglia d’Oro as a foal and he is with Graeme Rogerson in New Zealand. Their USA bred dam Artful Whisper was purchased by Hillside bloodstock manager Peter Ford at the 2005 Tattersalls Sale and she was bred back to Written Tycoon last year.
Victorian sires Magnus (Eliza Park International) and Domesday (Darley) were also represented by stakes winners at Ascot on Saturday.
The River (Magnus) staked his claim for the Karrakatta Plate with an impressive victory in the LR Perth Stakes (1100m). He had won the WA Magic Millions 2YO Classic at Pinjarra last month.
And Bob Peters cornered the classic trials with his Domesday homebreds Heart Starter (LR Roberts Stakes) and Arcadia Dream (LR Natasha Stakes).
Heart Starter is a half-brother to Perth Cup winner Dream Love and is a $2.50 TAB favourite for the G2 WA Derby on April 16. Arcadia Dream is a $2.20 TAB favourite for the G3 WA Oaks on April 2.
