Heaven-sent return by Whobegotyou

Whobegotyou is a first-up specialist and he kept that fresh record intact at Caulfield on Saturday.  The Street Cry gelding came from well back to win the G2 Lawrence Stakes (1400m) by a neck from unlucky mare Lights Of Heaven.

Whobegotyou (6g Street Cry – Temple Of Peace by Carnegie) had been sidelined since the autumn carnival after a G2 victory in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington in March.  He has never finished out of the top two in eight first up appearances.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh predicted the Street Cry gelding will head towards the Cox Plate again.  “He’s a bit bigger and burlier and there’s no So You Think or More Joyous around this year, either,” he said.  “He’s certainly going to win his share of races through the spring at weight-for-age.”

Whobegotyou has been installed a $7 favourite to win the $3 million Cox Plate at his third attempt.

Bred by Lockyer Thoroughbreds, Whobegotyou is out of the stakes-placed mare Temple Of Peace and the Lawrence Stakes, previously known as the J J Liston Stakes, increased his record to 10 wins in 28 starts for over $3.23 million in prizemoney.

He was a $64,000 buy for Laurence Eales at the 2007 Magic Millions 2YO HIT Sale

His sire Street Cry will stand the forthcoming breeding season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $110,000 (inc gst).

Street Cry’s 2010 book included G1 winners Black Mamba, Bramble Rose, Elegant Fashion, Miss Finland, Mnemosyne, Piavonic, Private Steer, Regal Cheer, Rewaaya as well as the dams of G1 winners Niconero, Serenade Rose, Shamekha and Zarita.
