Two-time Tasmanian Horse of the Year Conquering died from a heart-attack after running in the Members Sprint Hcp in Hobart on Sunday.

Conquering (9g Dangerous – Currently by Acidity) was racing first-up after a 30 week spell.  He claimed 23 races and over $900,000 in prizemoney since a debut win at Elwick in November 2004.

Conquering was a crowd favourite because of his durability and incredible will to win.  A son of Greta West stallion Dangerous, he was treated like one of the family by trainer Charlie Goggin who also bred and broke him in.  

Goggin was too distraught to talk after rushing from the grandstand in a vain attempt to the save the gelding.  Leading jockey Stephen Maskiell, who won the Members Sprint on Western Wager, was also visibly upset.  

“It’s such a shock,” Maskiell said.  “I won 12 races on him and he looked absolutely magnificent in the parade ring.  When the chips were down he would go in for the fight and, more often than not, he would emerge the winner.”
