Blue Gum Farm sire Red Arrow received a Group 1 fillip in the lead-up to the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale when his close relation Mrs Onassis won the MRC Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield on Saturday.
Red Arrow (Red Ransom) has 6 first-crop yearlings heading for Oaklands Junction – his colts were popular at the Gold Coast Magic Millions selling for $50,000 to David Jolly and $42,500 to Gerald Ryan.
Ryan trains Mrs Onassis and he indicated the mare will be freshened up for another Group 1 in The Galaxy at Randwick on April 20. “It was a nice pick-up ride considering she beat Ortensia in a trial the other day,” winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy said. “She really has got a sprint on her and is a pretty worthy winner.”
Mrs Onassis (General Nediym) is out of a half-sister to Red Arrow. Their dam Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon) was a G1 winner of the VATC Blue Diamond Stakes and MVRC Australia Stakes.
Red Arrow commenced racing in Australia where he established himself as a top weight-for-age performer under trainer Anthony Cummings. Transferred to California, he landed the G3 Los Angeles Hcp at Hollywood Park carving out the 1200m in a slashing 1.08.92s.
Australia’s burgeoning Red Ransom sireline is spearheaded by Charge Forward and Domesday. The second charge includes Red Arrow and fellow up-and-coming stallions All American, Red Element, Duporth and Onemorenomore.
Red Arrow is bred on the proven Red Ransom – Last Tycoon cross as Australian Horse of the Year Typhoon Tracy. Blue Gum Farm owner Philip Campbell stood him for a $6,600 (inc gst) service fee last year.
Blue Gum’s consignment of Red Arrows for the Melbourne Premier includes an outstanding colt from Treasure Box (Lot 119). He’s a half-brother to five winners – the best of them being Brisbane black-type mare She’s In The Guide.
