Citidancer (Ire) was pensioned by Yarradale Stud two years ago but he’s still a force in the broodmare ranks.
He was represented by a Group 1 winner in that category when Fashion Plate landed the Las Virgenes Stakes (1600m) at Santa Anita on Saturday.
Fashion Plate (3f Old Fashioned – Miss Puzzle by Citidancer) had won her maiden by 6 lengths at Santa Anita on December 29 and she stepped up for a half-length victory over G1 Hollywood Starlet winner Streaming.
“When they came to her, she dug in and tried real hard,” trainer Simon Callaghan remarked. “She’s a special filly. It means a lot to win this race. She went nice fractions, she went pretty quick and I think that was a testament to her courage and ability that she was able to do that and sustain the run.”
Fashion Plate is owned by Arnold Zetcher and Coolmore Stud associate Michael Tabor. She will head to the G1 Santa Anita Oaks on April 5 before a decision is made on a start in the G1 Kentucky Oaks on May 2.
Zetcher also raced Midnight Interlude, a Group 1 winner of the 2011 Santa Anita Derby by Yarradale shuttler War Chant.
Fashion Plate’s sire Old Fashioned (Unbridled’s Song) stands at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky. Her dam Miss Puzzle (NZ) was bred across the Tasman before Citidancer transferred to stand in Australia. She won at Ellerslie and Tauranga and was also Listed placed in the 2001 Soliloquy Stakes.
Miss Puzzle was sold off-shore in February 2002 and added a win to her record in the USA before retiring to stud. Fashion Plate was a $340,000 graduate of the Ocala 2YO Sale in April 2013.
