Golden week for Karaka

Gold Sand completed a stellar week for Karaka graduates with a Listed victory in the C S Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) at Morphettville on Monday.

The Karaka scorecard included 8 stakes winners in Australia, New Zealand and Singapore headed by Group 1 winners Shamexpress (Newmarket Hcp), Ocean Park (NZ Stakes), Ruud Awakening (Diamond Stakes) and Sangster (Auckland Cup).

Gold Sand (6g Footstepsinthesand – Quinze Love by Danehill) is trained by Lee and Shannon Hope and they also prepare G3 Naturalism Stakes winner Folding Gear (Johar) who is a graduate of the NZB Ready to Run Sale.

Lee Hope booked his godson Craig Williams for the ride in Adelaide and the champion jockey sent the gelding to the front in the straight before drawing away to score by a length.  “He raced really good for me,” Williams said.  “He did want to think about a few things late but I made sure he didn’t switch off.”

The C S Hayes Memorial improved Gold Sand’s record to 9 wins in 25 starts and it was his first at stakes level.  He warmed up for the black-type breakthrough with good fourths in the LR Xmas Stakes at Caulfield and LR Kilmore Cup.

Gold Sand was a $57,500 buy from Halo Farm at the NZB 2008 Karaka Select Sale.  The Hopes train him for Alan & Mary Birrell, Marcus & Nicole Birrell, Pat & Suzie De Kretser and Jeremy Sylvester.
