NZ bred gelding Somepin Anypin passed his biggest test with a four length victory in the G3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m) on Thursday.
Somepin Anypin (4g Pins – Ungaro by Centaine) had broken the 1400 metre track record at Rosehill at his previous start but there were queries as to whether he could run out strong mile.
The Pins gelding put those doubts to bed with an emphatic all the way victory. “He could be one of the best horses I’ve trained,” Portelli. said. “He can stretch his distances. He sprints and then he can get up to a mile. You can have a lot of fun with those sorts of horses.”
Somepin Anypin may remain in work for the G2 Villiers Stakes in December although the G1 Doncaster Handicap is now firmly on the radar.
He was purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock from Waikato Stud for $30,000 at NZ Bloodstock’s 2009 Karaka Premier Sale and has now won over $300,000.
Somepin Anypin is the 43rd stakes winner for his sire Pins who boasts a 67% strike-rate. He was Champion Hong Kong sire as well as New Zealand’s leading sire for black-type winners last season.
His dam Ungaro has also foaled G1 performer Salsa (O’Reilly) and Hong Kong winner Evergreen (Danasinga). Their dam Ungaro has a yearling colt by O’Reilly on offer at the Karaka Premier Sale in January.
Pins has nine lots in the upcoming NZ Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale including Lot 185, the half-brother to the G3 winner Larry’s Never Late (Pentire) and stakes winner Collar (O’Reilly).
