Frankel will emerge from his winter quarters for a racecourse gallop at Newbury on April 20 or 21.
Speaking from his Warren Place stables at Newmarket, trainer Sir Henry Cecil said he favoured a spin at the Greenham Stakes meeting on April 20 or 21. The workout will preface his seasonal return in the G1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on May 19.
“I’ll take him down there for the night – it will do him good. He has wintered very well. He’s grown a bit and he’s strengthened a lot. He seems to have grown up mentally, which will help me.”
Frankel (Galileo) is unbeaten in 9 starts from 1400m to 1600m and bookmakers have priced him a long odds-on favourite for the Lockinge. Juddmonte’s wonder colt was last seen running on powerfully to win the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on October 15.
“Racing needs champions and let us pray that he can continue where he left off,” Cecil added. “Personally, I think he will get a mile and a quarter (2000m) now that he has learned to settle. He could be an even better horse at that trip!”
Frankel’s summer target at that distance is the G1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in July 7. He topped the 2011 World Thoroughbred Rankings with a rating of 136, four above Australian superstar Black Caviar.
