Trainer Darren Weir prepared the first Australian winner by Raise The Flag at Stawell on Sunday.
The New Zealand based stallion sired Unfurl to a three-quarter length victory in the Fishers IGA Maiden Plate (1600m). She broke through third time out as the short-priced favourite after weighing in over shorter trips at Mildura and Donald last month.
Unfurl (3f Raise The Flag – Emerald Fire by Honor Grades) was a $40,000 buy at the 2013 Karaka Premier yearling sale and is a half-sister to the Riccarton stakes winners Inferno (Yamanin Vital) and Ortem Fire (Gallant Guru).
Raise The Flag (GB) is a half-brother to champion sire Dansili and the Group 1 winners Banks Hill, Cacique, Champs Elysees, Heat Haze and Intercontinental. He only raced once when unplaced at Longchamp in April 2008.
He is a son of Sadler´s Wells and stands at White Robe Lodge in the South Island in association with Juddmonte Farms. There have been three Kiwi winners to date from his first crop that are now three year-olds – Princess Brook and Landale’s Gold (Otago) and Blue Flag (Ellerslie).
