Dufellforte gave Fairdale Stud freshman Fully Fledged and Darley champion Lonhro career firsts in New Zealand on Thursday.
There was plenty to like about Dufellforte on debut in the Dave & Eddie Maiden (1000m) at New Plymouth. A big, solid youngster, he sat outside talented filly Orbity (Magic Albert) and then forged ahead of the favourite to score by a neck.
Dufellforte (2g Fully Fledged – Shezadorable by Lonhro) is just the second starter for his sire who retired to Fairdale after a career highlighted by a G1 victory in the Ford Diamond Stakes. He only started 13 times after injuring a tendon in the G2 Phar Lap Stakes at Rosehill as an autumn three-year-old.
Dufellforte (NZ) is a homebred for part-owners Sir Patrick Hogan, Alistair Sutherland and Peter Walker. They bought his dam Shezadorable as a foal for $120,000 at the 2007 Magic Millions National Sale.
Shezadorable produced Lonhro’s first winner as a broodmare sire at New Plymouth but, sadly, she died while delivering Dufellforte. “We had to resuscitate the foal after he stopped breathing,” Fairdale studmaster Duncan Fell explained. “The foster mother Sky Mist did a good job and he’s grown into a lovely horse.”
Dufellforte is a direct descendant of 1987 NZ Horse of the Year Tidal Light (Diagramatic) who was a G1 winner of the New Zealand Derby, Air New Zealand Stakes and STC Canterbury Guineas.
Fell has always been confident Fully Fledged (Align) would make the grade at the family’s Palmerston North property. “He has a pedigree full of speed and high-class sprinting form,” Fell said. “He suits breeders looking for two-year-old precocity.”
Fully Fledged’s first crop sold to $75,000 at Karaka earlier this year. He has another 7 yearlings catalogued for the NZ Bloodstock Select and Festival Sales in February.
