First winner for Yarradale sire Musket

Yarradale Stud sire Musket moved off the mark with his first winner at Newcastle on Thursday.

Rutherglen opened his account in style scoring a front-running three length victory while clocking a class record 1.16.83s for the Yellowglen Maiden Hcp (1300m).  The David Payne trained colt had been placed on debut at Kembla Grange earlier this month.

Rutherglen (2c Musket – Zirascible by Zabeel) is raced by John Thompson whose black and silver fernleaf colours have adorned the likes of G1 Caulfield Cup winner Diatribe.  His latest winner was a $58,000 yearling buy from Bowness Stud.

Musket (Redoute’s Choice) is a three-quarter brother to Makybe Diva and won up to Group 2 level in the 2008 Shannon Stakes at Rosehill.  He stood a sole season at Darley’s Twin Hills Stud in 2009 before transferring to Yarradale in Western Australia.

“His first Sunspeed yearlings sold at the Perth Magic Millions this week,” Yarradale Stud manager Bernadette Hamill said on Thursday.  “I guess it would have helped if his first winner arrived a day before the sale instead of a day after.  His stock aren’t precocious types so having a February 2YO winner is a positive sign of things to come.”

Seven Muskets sold at the Perth Magic Millions at a median of $30,000.  Yarradale’s on-site sale in May will also include more of his first Sunspeed bred yearlings.
