First winner by Barbados

South Australian sire Barbados waited until the end of his freshman season to move off the mark at Gawler on Sunday.

His debutante Atlantica came from the back of the field to win the Terrace Function Centre Maiden (1219m) by over a length from the favourite Mighty Mick (Hussonet).

Atlantica (2f Barbados – Hot Senora by Host) is trained by Jim Smith and is the 7th first-crop starter for her sire this season.  She is from an unraced daughter of G2 Kewney Stakes winner Umaline.

Barbados (Redoute’s Choice) won a Canterbury maiden for Darley but a broken pelvis ended his career after five starts.  He retired to Peter and Mark Toole’s Ducatoon Park in 2013.

His dam Virage De Fortune (Anabaa) was a Group 1 winner of the QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes and MVRC Australia Stakes.  She was later purchased by Sheikh Mohammed for a record-breaking $3.40 million at the 2007 Inglis Broodmare Sale.

Second dam Virage is a daughter of Kenmare from champion mare Emancipation.

Barbados has averaged 50 mares in four seasons at Ducatoon Park in Kadina where he stands for a $4,000 (inc gst) service fee.
