Akhedasset has posted the first domestic stakes win for his sire Akhenaton in the G3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) at Ascot.

The veteran sprinter was specked from $31 to $13 before prevailing in a photo-finish over Dawn Approach and odds-on favourite Magnifisio in a four-horse field.  “He ran a great second in the Hannans Hcp before the owners sent him back down to me,” trainer Dion Luciani said.  “He was in good order for today and ran right up to his best – I couldn’t be happier.”

Akhedasset (7g Akhenaton – Business Asset by Key Business) has won 10 races and $372,765 for Luciani and Goldfields trainer Peter Fernie.  Part-owned by Neil Warburton, Rob Scarvaci, Tom Percy and Andrew Inglis, he will be set for the LR Carbine Cup of WA Hcp (1400m) at Ascot on November 21.

“Sometimes the unexpected happens with short-priced favourites in small fields,” jockey Glenn Smith said.  “I followed Magnifisio and went back to the paint when she pushed out on the home turn.  He dropped the bit so I had to give him a crack to wake him up.”

Akhenaton (Snippets) won the G1 Doomben Cup in 2000 before retiring to Coral Park Stud in North Dandalup.  He sired Triple Luck to win the G1 Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy at Penang in 2009 but local feature winners have been thin on the ground.

Coral Park owners Glenn & Kathy Money transferred Akhenaton to Waterford Stud in Coolup where he stood for four years until 2011.  ASB records show he has covered just one mare in the each of the last three seasons at stud.
