First stakes winner by Equiano

Equiano (Fr) sired his first stakes winner at Ayr on Saturday and then doubled up in a rich sales-related race an hour later at Newmarket.

The Swettenham Stud shuttler struck with Dark Reckoning in the G3 Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr and then hit a juvenile jackpot when Lacing won the Tattersalls Millions Fillies Stakes worth 100,000 pounds.

Dark Reckoning (2f Equiano – Impressible by Oasis Dream) had won at Pontefract and Ripon before landing the Group 3 for Qatar Racing,  “She has done nothing wrong and deserved this,” trainer Ann Duffield said.  “I’m glad she’s justified our faith from Day 1.”

Qatar Racing agent David Redvers bought her for 31,000 pounds (AUD 52,535) at the 2013 Doncaster Bloodstock yearling sale.  Bred and sold by Newsells Park, she is from a half-sister to G1 Nunthorpe Stakes winner Reverence.

Lacing is another Equiano filly with high-profile owners.  Newsells Park sold her to Cheveley Park Stud for 170,000 guineas (AUD 302,710) at the 2013 Tattersalls October yearling sale.

“We started her off relatively early and Ryan Moore said she gave him a nice feel,” Cheveley Park managing director Chris Richardson said at Newmarket.  “But he also said we should be patient.”

Lacing (2f Equiano – Lacework by Pivotal) was always travelling like a winner in the Tattersalls Millions and stayed on strongly under Paul Hanagan to score by a couple of lengths from Hundi (Fastnet Rock).

“Paul said the further she went the better,” Richardson revealed.  “We might come back here in October for the another sales race but, from our prospective, we would also like her to get some black type.”

Lacing is a half-sister to LR Marygate Stakes winner Miss Work Of Art (Dutch Art) and G3 Musidora Stakes runner-up Romantic Settings (Mount Nelson).

Equiano sired promising colt Desert Force to win at Newbury on Friday and he rocketed up the English first-season premiership after the feature double on Saturday.

The Newsells Park – Swettenham Stud shuttler has been represented by 14 individual winners this year for earnings the equivalent of AUD 403,550.

Equiano (Fr) is standing for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee at Swettenham Stud.
