First foal for Dick Turpin

The first foal by Group 1 shuttler Dick Turpin arrived at Wood Farm Stud in Cumbria on Tuesday.

The brown colt is from Saint Ann (Geiger Counter) who was the first mare covered by Dick Turpin at the English National Stud last year.  The USA bred mare has already produced four winners including the G3 performer Sienna Storm (Peintre Celebre).

Dick Turpin (Ire) returned to England earlier this month after serving his initial southern book at Gray Williamson’s Mungrup Stud in Western Australia.

His first foal was delivered without complication at Wood Farm Stud which is based near Lake Windermere in England’s far north-west.  “We are really pleased with him,” owner Gary Middlebrook said. “He’s a good bodied, athletic colt with a bold inquisitive nature and he’s doing really well.”

Dick Turpin (Arakan) defeated Canford Cliffs in the G3 Greenham Stakes at Newmarket and he also claimed G1 victories in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly and Premio Vittorio Di Capua in Milan.

English National Stud managing director Brian O’Rourke was delighted to hear news of his first foal.  “Gary and Lesley Middlebrook were among the first breeders in to support Dick Turpin when we bought him.  We are very much looking forward to seeing the rest of his first crop of foals; if they are anything like this chap, they will be a real feather in his cap.”

Dick Turpin covered 90 mares at Mungrup Stud last year.  “It was a pleasure working with him,” Williamson said.  “He’s a tremendous horse and there’s no problems with his fertility.”
