Fast clip suits First Command

First Command quickened nicely off a fast clip to claim the LR Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday.  The Anthony Freedman trained gelding will now be given a chance at Group 1 level in the Oakleigh Plate next month.

First Command (6g Commands – River Serenade by Hurricane Sky) was previously trained by Anthony’s Hall of Fame brother Lee who bought him for $170,000 at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Bred and sold by Baramul Stud, First Command’s earnings soared past $736,000 with his fourth black-type scalp following the G2 Perri Cutten Sprint, LR The Heath Hcp and LR Cleary Stakes at Caulfield.

“We will keep him ticking over at 1000m to 1100m,” Freedman said.  “A race like the Newmarket over 1200m might stop him now and I’m keen on putting them where they can win.

“The Rubiton Stakes is the next lead-up to the Oakleigh Plate but I’m not getting to get too far ahead of myself.”

First Command deserves a Group 1 and the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) would be an appropriate target.  His dam River Serenade is a sister to 2003 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove.

A son of leading Darley sire Commands, First Command is a younger half-brother to Hong Kong star One World (Danehill Dancer) who was a G1 runner-up to Sacred Kingdom in the 2009 HK Sprint.
