English Derby winner New Approach got off to the perfect start when his first Australian runner sailed home an impressive winner at Caulfield on Boxing Day.
Darley homebred Montsegur broke sharply and then broke clear to win the Joe Brown Plate (1000m) by three lengths in a quick 57.72 seconds. “She’s fast, real fast” jockey Vlad Duric said. “She was always going to win and was very strong on the line.”
Montsegur (2f New Approach – Chatoyant by Flying Spur) is out of a winning half-sister to G3 Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Legally Bay. The mare has a filly foal by Street Sense and visited Street Cry in 2012.
New Approach launched his stud career in Europe this year with a history-making stakes treble at Royal Ascot courtesy of Dawn Approach, Newfangled and Tha’Ir. Dawn Approach went on to emulate his sire in the G1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Darley has bumped his Dalham Hall service fee from 22,500 pounds to 35,000 pounds for 2013.
New Approach (Galileo) enjoyed an outstanding racing career that saw him crowned European 2YO Champion after an unbeaten five-race streak including the G1 National Stakes and G1 Dewhurst Stakes.
As a three-year-old, he landed the English Derby and Irish Champion Stakes before retiring to stud after claiming the English Champion Stakes by six lengths – smashing the 24-year-old 2000m track record in the process.
New Approach will be represented by three yearlings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions;

Lot 482: Filly out of a winning half-sister to the Listed winner The Big Chill.
