Equiano 3YOs winning in Europe

Equiano (Fr) continued the latest winning run with his three year-olds when Fujiano bolted in at Brighton on Tuesday.

The Mike Murphy trained filly is the third European 3yo maiden winner sired by Equiano in the last week.

Having her first start for the yard, Fujiano scored by three lengths when resuming from a 22 week spell in the Raceday Shuttle Maiden Stakes (1200m).  “She broke well and always had the leaders covered before putting matters to bed,” Murphy said.  “She kept on all the way to the line and it was a convincing win.”

Fujiano (3f Equiano – The Fugative by Nicholas) is from a mare who won 8 races and was stakes placed at Deauville.  She cost 16,000gns (AUD 32,190) at the 2013 Tattersalls October yearling sale.

Equiano shuttles from Newsells Park to Swettenham Stud and he will stand for a $13,750 (inc gst) fee in Victoria this year.  He sired 16 individual 2yo winners in Europe in 2014 and there has already been another 10 individual 3yo winners this year.

Final Venture (3g Equiano – Sharplaw Venture by Polar Falcon) began the latest winning run when he scored on debut at Newcastle last Tuesday.  Bred by Newsells Park, he missed the kick but recovered to lead inside the final furlong and then held on well to the finish.

Frasquita (3f Equiano – Fabulously Red by Red Ransom) added another notch for the Newsells Park brand in the Prix de Gouvieux (1200m) at Chantilly on Saturday.  She had been placed at Deauville earlier this year for owner Mme Victoria Gadbin.

“Equiano made a very promising start with his first-crop two year-olds last year,” Newsells general manager Julian Dollar said.  “And, as one would expect from a horse who was at his best from three to five years-old, his runners are showing encouraging signs in their classic year.”
