God’s Own gelding Disciple completed a career-best training performance by Chris Waller at Rosehill on Saturday.
Disciple (4g God’s Own – Myrrh by Nassipour) was giving the leaders a dozen lengths at the top of the straight but picked them up with a paralysing finish in the Blackwoods Hcp (1200m).
“He’s turned the corner this time in,” Waller said after the first-up victory. “He was caught three wide and had to sustain a long run to get there. The leader (Big Bonanza) kept kicking but my bloke really dug deep.”
Disciple was Waller’s fifth winner on the Rosehill card and he also added the G3 Rough Habit Plate at Eagle Farm with Hawkspur. The Kiwi ex-pat has now trained the winners of 137½ races in Sydney this season and is assured of overtaking Tommy Smith and Gai Waterhouse who hold the record with 156 wins.
Disciple is by God’s Own who has just transferred to Greta West Stud in Victoria. His record-breaking Rosehill winner is from Myrrh (NZ) and was a $100,000 buy for part-owner Colm Santry at the 2010 Gold Coast Magic Millions.
Waller had trained Disciple’s older half-brother Triple Honour to a G1 victory in the 2008 AJC Doncaster Handicap.
God’s Own is a 10 year-old son of Redoute’s Choice and he will stand at Greta West by arrangement with Eliza Park and Yallambee Stud.
