Day 1 Tattersalls Mare Sale – Star turn by Sadler’s Wells

Twyla Tharp was the star turn when the Tattersalls December Mare Sale commenced at Newmarket on Monday.  The 10 year-old daughter of Sadler’s Wells made 1.70 million guineas after French agent Nicholas de Watrigant outbid David Ingordo and Tomoyuki Nakamura.

Twyla Tharp is the dam of this year’s G1 Nassau Stakes winner The Fugue (Dansili) and was sold in foal to Oasis Dream.  “She’s a beautiful mare, the dam of a champion and with the best pedigree in this catalogue,” said de Watrigant.  “Her Oasis Dream foal will be retained but we haven’t thought about the next stallion yet.”

Turnover during Day 1 was up 7% to 11.36 million guineas while the average increased 3% to 61,126 guineas and the median rose 2% to 30,000 guineas.  The clearance rate jumped 8 points to 81%.

Irish 1000 Guineas Trial runner-up Sapphire Pendant (Danehill Dancer) was knocked down to agent Pierre-Yves Bureau for 480,000 guineas on behalf of the Wertheimer brothers.  She is from the immediate family of Champion USA 3YO Filly Rags To Riches and was sold in foal to Sea The Stars.

“We’ve been trying for a long time to get into this family but there haven’t been many opportunities,” Bureau said.  “We have not decided which stallion she will visit, and we may not send her straight to France as she has a very early cover.”

Four year-old Hennessy mare Nessina was purchased by Tony Nerses for 300,000 guineas acting on behalf of Imad Al Sagar and Salah Al Homaizi.  “She is a beautiful mare,” said Nerses.  “She has a wonderful page and is carrying a colt by Invincible Spirit who will be retained to race.”

Nerses bought a total of five mares for 703,000 guineas on Day 1 for the former owners of the English Derby winner Authorized.  They recently purchased Chevington Stud and plan to rename it Blue Diamond South.

Arch mare Rochitta also made 300,000 guineas.  She is a half-sister to G2 winner Lord Admiral and was bought by Barouche Stud’s Rory Matthews.  “She was my pick today,” he said.  “There are stallions all the way down the page and she is also in foal to Hat Trick who has had Group 1 winners in Europe and the USA.

The Tattersalls December Mare Sale continues on Tuesday, December 4.
