Cosy win for Hera in Great Northern Foal Stakes

Roger James hasn’t discounted chasing further black type honours with Hera (NZ) after the filly’s resounding victory in the LR Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie.

“I’m not certain yet, but there are a couple of options,” the Cambridge trainer said on Saturday .  “I tend to think she will go out, but that won’t be a decision I’ll be making today.”

The LR Castletown Stakes at Wanganui next Saturday and the LR Ryder Stakes at Otaki on July 27 are the two possibilities should James be tempted to press on with Hera after her latest success.

Hera (2f O’Reilly – Corsica by Centaine) enjoyed a cosy run then stuck to her task strongly in the straight to give the stable a running double in the Great Northern Foal Stakes following Misstrum last year.  “I thought it was a very good effort,” James said.  “We identified Devour as the danger and she was holding her the line.”

Hera is raced by long-time stable clients Ron and Fran Dixon who enjoyed past Group success with Cronus, Hades, Tethys and Kaatoon.  She is from the family of G1 Ellerslie and Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Ballroom Babe.

The Dixons bought her from Waikato Stud for $28,000 at the 2012 NZB Select yearling sale.
