Coolmore Stud acquires American Pharoah

USA Triple Crown contender American Pharoah is the latest high-profile acquisition by Coolmore Stud.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner will eventually retire to its Kentucky base at Ashford Stud.  “The offer was too good to pass up,” owner Ahmed Zayat confirmed on Wednesday.

American Pharoah will bid to become the first USA Triple Crown winner in 37 years when he contests the Belmont Stakes on June 6.  The son of Pioneerof The Nile has won five races at the highest level for Bob Baffert.

Zayat is also a majority owner of Pioneerof The Nile (Empire Maker) who stands at WinStar Farm in Kentucky.  He sold American Pharoah’s dam Littleprincessemma (Yankee Gentleman) for $2.10 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Earlier this week, Zayat’s son Justin told ESPN that studs had offered “north of $20 million” for the breeding rights to their homebred colt, who was also Champion USA 2YO in 2014.

News of the deal comes a month after Coolmore Stud announced it had purchased a controlling interest in G1 Golden Slipper winner Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro) for a reported $40 million.
