Trainer Roy Rogers and his wife Wendy have kick-started their new venture in Albany with promising two year-old Chillie Storm.

The Red Hot Choice youngster won a Bunbury maiden last month and doubled up in the Del Basso Nursery Plate (1000m) at Belmont.  Saturday’s all-the-way victory in town sent his earnings to $72,150 including $25,000 in Westspeed bonuses.

Rogers bought Chillie Storm for $26,000 at the 2014 Yarradale Stud Sale and went back and paid $40,000 for his yearling half-sister by Scandal Keeper last Sunday.

“Chillie Storm wasn’t overly big as a yearling and we got him at the right price,” Rogers said this week.  “The filly is well-balanced and most of the boys were happy to buy into her, too.

Yarradale owner Ron Sayers kept a share in Chillie Storm and long-time client Peter Scott put the syndicate together with Marty and Michael Kain, Michael Fitzgerald, Don Evans and Mick Wayne.

Their dam Stormy Maddie (Metal Storm) won 9 races in Kalgoorlie and she had already foaled winners by Danetime, Redoutable and Scandal Keeper.

Red Hot Choice is a stakes performed son of Redoute’s Choice who stands at Mungrup Stud. The only other runner seen out from his first-crop is David Harrison’s recent Lark Hill trial winner Hot Bresa.

Rogers transferred to stables close to Albany racecourse after stints in the Swan Valley and at Lark Hill next to good mate Vaughn Sigley.  Wendy is a qualified vet and operates Great Southern Equine Veterinary.

“Horses do really well down here,” Roy declared.  “Chillie Storm beat a pretty good field at Belmont and he will have a week off before getting ready for a 1200 metre race on June 13.  He’s a lovely horse and there’s no problems handling the float trip up to Perth.”
