Dear Demi will back up in next week’s G1 Champagne Stakes after an impressive victory in the LR Fernhill Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Dear Demi (2f Dehere – Shirley by Zabeel) atoned for a last-start placing in the Baillieu Handicap to break through on the Doncaster Mile support card. “I think she is a lovely staying filly,” trainer Clarry Conners said. “I can’t wait until next year when she goes over 2000 metres and further.”
A $130,000 graduate of the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions, Dear Demi is a homebred for Strawberry Hill Stud owner John Singleton. She is from an unraced daughter of G1 Golden Slipper winner Merlene. Third dam Bold Promise won a Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Conners and Singleton combined to win the 2000 Golden Slipper with Dehere filly Belle du Jour.
A half brother to Dear Demi by champion sire Encosta de Lago will go under the hammer at the 2012 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale. The colt in question is also a three quarter brother to South African based stakes winner Merlene de Lago.
Dehere retired to Coolmore’s USA base at Ashford Stud in 1995 but was sold to stand in Japan four years later. He returned to Ashford in 2006 and was a regular shuttler to Australia until his sale to Turkey in January 2010.
