There is a Yearling Sale held in Rockhampton each year that slips under the radar for many yearling buyers outside of the Central Queensland area. It has been an annual event there for many years offering local and intra-state vendors the opportunity to showcase their yearlings to a strong local and visitor buying bench.
Scheduled this year for Sunday, April 14, the sale has been known as the Capricornia Yearling Sale for the last three years and it is now promoted by the Central Queensland Thoroughbred Breeders Association Inc (CQTBA). The sale, associated race day and other related events are managed jointly by the CQTBA and the Rockhampton Jockey Club (RJC).
The point of difference for this sale is definitely the $100,000 Capricornia Sale 2YO Classic race. This race is exclusive to sale graduates with each entrant automatically nominated for the event. There are under 120 entrants for this sale so the chances of buyers winning a $100,000 race is very much in their favour, in comparison to other sale related 2YO races.
Yearling buyers who pay the first acceptance for the 2014 race will also be eligible for two (2) $10,000 bonuses on selected 2YO races held in Mackay and Rockhampton leading up to next year’s sale race. These bonuses will be paid on a proportionate basis to the first three placegetters in the selected races and will be additional to the normal prizemoney and QTIS incentives.
Sale co-ordinator Jeff Leaver explains: “This year’s sale is certainly the strongest sale we have promoted to date, both in terms of numbers and quality of yearlings. There are 116 lots catalogued this year and it is a well balanced offering with yearlings from leading sires, popular sires and new season sires represented.
“We have 76 QTIS eligible yearlings this year along with 26 BOBS eligible yearlings. When you consider that the winner of our 2014 Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic worth $100,000 in prizemoney must come from this sale it is one heck of an incentive to buy one of our yearlings.”
Sires represented include All Bar One, California Dane, Casino Prince, Changeintheweather (USA), Court Command, Elvstroem, Ferocity, Hidden Dragon, Hotel Grand, Jet Spur, Real Saga, Seidnazar, Wonderful World, Written Tycoon and Zizou.
This sale has produced some genuine bargains in recent years with River Lad (G3 winner and $389,500), Aspiran ($249,950) and the promising Kilwinning Option ($213,450) all being sold or passed in at or below $11,000.
