Canford Cliffs transfers to South Africa

Canford Cliffs (Ire) has shuttled from Coolmore Ireland to Blue Gum Farm for the last five years but his days in Australia appear to be numbered.

ANZ News reports he will join the Highlands Stud roster in South Africa.

Canford Cliffs sired 35 Irish-bred, first-crop 2yo winners in 2015, however, he hasn’t been anywhere near as successful in Victoria.  His initial Australian-based 2yo crop was restricted to Sale winner Cliff Hanger.

The best of his two second-crop juvenile winners down here this season has been last-start Sandown Lakeside winner Cliff’s Edge.

Blue Gum Farm put him over 136 mares in 2015 but ASB figures indicate his book dropped to 30 last year at a $13,750 (inc gst) fee.

Canford Cliffs follows the same route as former Coolmore cast-off Antonius Pius (Danzig). He shuttled to Australia for four years before relocating to Highlands Stud in 2009.
