Canford Cliffs will shuttle from Coolmore Stud’s Irish headquarters to Blue Gum Farm this year. The champion miler will join the Victorian stud’s line-up of Elvstroem, Churchill Downs, Turffontein and Red Arrow.
“We are delighted to have acquired a horse of the calibre of Canford Cliffs and I have no doubt that he will be very popular with Australian breeders,” Blue Gum owner Phillip Campbell said. “He is from the same Hail To Reason sireline as More Than Ready, Sunday Silence and Roberto and his pedigree and conformation make him an ideal stallion for Danehill line mares.”
Canford Cliffs (Tagula) built an outstanding record of 7 wins from 11 starts including five straight Group I wins in his three and four-year-old seasons. He defeated the top-class gallopers Rip Van Winkle and Goldikova in races such as the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes.
Injury ended the stallion’s career after he finished second to wonder colt Frankel when attempting to defend his G1 Sussex Stakes title in July last year. “Canford Cliffs had great early speed as a two-year-old and stretched out to be a superb miler at three and four,” trainer Richard Hannon said. “He is without doubt the best horse I have had in over 40 years as a trainer.”
Canford Cliffs is serving his first northern book at Coolmore Stud in Ireland and will make the trek to Blue Gum where he will stand for $17,500 fee.
