Star filly California Wish earned a well-deserved spell after an authoritative victory in the Tasbreeders Magic Millions 3YO Classic on Wednesday evening.
California Wish (3f California Dane – Pirate’s Sirene by Portland Pirate) started a $2.50 favourite and travelled a treat outside the front-runner Clonbullogue. She accelerated to a winning lead at the top of the straight and kept digging to defeat 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Tiger’s Cup by a half length.
It was a fitting end to a long preparation that resulted in three wins from four starts. She was purchased for $8,000 by part-owners Gary Mudgway and Gary Richards from Brooklyn Park at the 2011 Tasmanian Magic Millions.
Trainer Adam Trinder described the winner as an untapped talent. “I was keeping my options open about a trip to Adelaide,” he said. “But I think a spell would benefit her now. She’s already done a great job and I think a trip away might be too much at this stage.
“The California Danes can be a handful but she’s got loads of ability and I’m really looking forward to the future.”
Brooklyn Park studmaster Allan Howard has a California Dane half-sister to Omega Quest catalogued as Lot 86 at Thursday’s Tasmanian Magic Millions.
California Dane (Danehill) stands at Baerami Thoroughbreds in NSW and was a G2 winner of the Stanley Wootton Stakes and Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley where he broke the track record for 1200m.
