Bunbury Cup beckons Ningaloo Blitz

A Bunbury Cup campaign is on the cards for born-again mare Ningaloo Blitz after she completed a hat-trick at Ascot on Wednesday.

Ningaloo Blitz (4m Natural Blitz – Elzahoney by El Moxie) has shed the bridesmaid tag since stretching out to longer distances this summer.  She doubled up by four lengths over 2000 metres at Bunbury and Pinjarra before another convincing victory in the Twitter Perth Racing Hcp (2200m).

“That was a very pleasing,” trainer Dan Morton said at Ascot.  “It’s all starting to come together now that she’s getting over a journey.”

In her first 18 starts, Ningaloo Blitz only banked a Belmont win although she did earn prizemoney in half of them including a fourth place finish in the G2 WA Guineas.

“She was a bit stiff in some of those races and I didn’t want any excuses today,” Morton explained.  “I told Jordan (Mallyon) not to let them stack up and make it a sprint home.  He took off early and that left her a bit vulnerable but she was strong in the last furlong.”

Morton will map out her autumn campaign after conferring with his cousin Aaron Morton who bred and manages the syndicate that races the mare.  The LR Bunbury Cup (2200m) is scheduled for March 14 and the LR Pinjarra Cup (2300m) on March 24.

Ningaloo Blitz is by Mogumber Park sire Natural Blitz and her dam Elzahoney has since foaled filly and a colt by the Group 2 winning son of Dehere.

Mogumber Park owner Colin Brown has entered 13 yearlings for the Perth Magic Millions.  Among them are youngsters by interstate sires Big Brown, Myboycharlie, Choisir, Not a Single Doubt and Foreplay.  “The Foreplay is a flashy chestnut and he’s a cracker,” Brown said of the half-brother to Brisbane stakes winner Antidotes.  “We bought him as a foal and he’s grown into a good sized colt.”

Among the local sires, Brown has an outstanding Oratorio – Clarecastle colt.  “Clarecastle’s first yearling made $100,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions.  Her latest colt is a lot like the one that Paul Jordan bought last year.”
