Boggoms a bargain for Birdsville

Leading trainer Phillip Stokes is looking forward to bringing Boggoms back for his next prep later this season.

The Foreplay 4yo capped off a wonderful summer campaign winning the UBET Handicap (1250m) at Morphettville earlier this month.  He won 3 races and was never out of place in 6 starts for Stokes and the Saddlers Knife Syndicate.

“He hasn’t missed a cheque yet and doesn’t know how to run a bad race,” Stokes said.  “He’s having a break now and we will see if he can take another step up next time.”

Boggoms was a bargain $10,000 buy for Hancock Quality Bloodstock (FBAA) at the 2013 Inglis August Sale in Melbourne.  He won first-up at Gawler in December 2015 but pulled up sore after losing a shoe and took a fair while to recover.

The Saddlers Knife Syndicate is managed by David & Nell Brook and is named after a beach on South Africa’s famed Garden Route.  Brook has been secretary of the Birdsville Racing Club for the past 30 years and he’s been instrumental in making it one of Australia’s most famous country meetings every September.

A week after Boggoms went for a spell, Adrian Hancock paid $340,000 for a More Than Ready half-sister to Listed winners Avisto (Soliloquy Stakes) & Celtic Tiger (Morphettville Guineas) at the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Now he’s counting down to the Adelaide Magic Millions from March 13 to 15.  “The Gold Coast sale was outstanding and the quality has gone up another notch in Adelaide,” Hancock said.  “It’s been on a rising plane but took a quantum leap when the gross jumped from around $8 million to near $12 million last year.”

Hancock is bloodstock consultant for Magic Millions in South Australia.  “It’s a sale where people have a great opportunity to come and buy a horse with confidence for respectable money,” he said.  “The market is in a good state at the moment and Adelaide is definitely a sale of quality at a reasonable average.”
