Blame breakthrough at Santa Anita

Claiborne Farm stallion Blame, who will go down in history as the only horse ever to defeat Zenyatta, celebrated another milestone on Thursday with his first winner as a sire.

Caval made the breakthrough with a near record-breaking victory over 1000 metres at Santa Anita.  Sent out an even-money favourite on debut, she led from the off and clocked 56.78s to get within a tick of the track record.

The Kentucky bred youngster sold for $150,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September yearling sale.  She is a half-sister to Dubai G2 Al Fahidi Fort winner Derbaa.  They are from a sister to Group 1 star Aljabr.

Caval (2f Blame – Sultana by Storm Cat) is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and will be set for the LR Cinderella Stakes (1200m) at Los Alamitos on July 13.  “We thought she had some talent,” he said.  “But it was a short field and she has a lot more proving to do.”

Blame (Arch) stands for a $30,000 fee at his birthplace – Claiborne Farm – in Kentucky.

In 2010, he won the G1 Stephen Foster Hcp at Churchill Downs and G1 Whitney Hcp at Saratoga before a signature victory over Zenyatta in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic.  He denied the champion mare a perfect record in her farewell at Churchill Downs after an unbeaten run of 19 victories.
