Scarlet Billows highlighted the Broodmare session at the Inglis Great Southern Sale when making $460,000 to the bid of Belmont Bloodstock Agency (FBAA).
She will join a growing number of mares to be covered by Woodside Park newcomer Cable Bay.
Scarlet Billows (Street Boss) won the G3 Maybe Mahal Stakes at Flemington and VOBIS Gold Distaff at Caulfield last year. The Darren Weir-trained mare was retired after an unplaced run in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville in May.
“The market is hungry for these Group-winning mares as we saw at the Gold Coast,” Belmont Bloodstock’s Damon Gabbedy said on Tuesday. “She’s for a new client who really likes Street Boss-line mares. She was sound and tough and looks a fantastic prospect.”
Gabbedy also secured next-best on the leader-board with $270,000 for Golden Penny who was offered in foal to Woodside Park champion Written Tycoon. The Blevic mare was a two-time stakes winning sprinter in Adelaide and was originally bought off the track for $100,000 by Randwick Bloodstock Agency (FBAA) in 2014.
“Blevic is doing a really good job as a broodmare sire and the Written Tycoon mating is a very good one – he’s flying,” Gabbedy said. “She’s good value and will likely to be covered by Sebring this year.”
Belmont Bloodstock weighed in with another $110,000 for 3yo filly Angasi during the Racehorse Sale at Oaklands on Wednesday. She is also by Street Boss and won at Bendigo and Echuca for Lindsay Park. Her older half-brother Shoreham (Reset) was a multiple stakes winner at Flemington.
Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) slotted into third spot on Tuesday’s leader-board when parting with $160,000 for Al Afraah. She was sold in foal to I Am Invincible and will be covered by Star Witness this year.
“I thought she was a cheap horse given the popularity and service fee of I Am Invincible,” Mills explained. “She will suit I Am Invincible being by Encosta De Lago out of a Danehill mare.”
Mills is hoping lightning can strike twice for the same clients. “I bought Streetcar Stella in foal to I Am Invincible for them a couple of years back and that colt made $1.50 million at the Easter Yearling Sale in April.
“I’ve had three clients with I Am Invincible yearlings this year and the others sold for $600,000 and $550,000 so I know what he’s capable of when you get a type.”
John Chalmers Bloodstock (FBAA) bought a half-dozen, mid-range mares at Oaklands including Flying Spur winner Sweet Home Chicago for $40,000. She is a half-sister to Get Square (G3 Norman Robinson Stakes) and was sold in foal to Rubick.
Chalmers also brokered the deal to stand Vert De Grece (Ire) at Geisel Park this year. He will replace All American who returns east to stand at Chatswood Stud after covering 113 mares in WA last year.
Vert De Grece (Verglas) was a runaway winner of the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in 2014. He was subsequently purchased as a Group 1 prospect for Hong Kong but blew a tendon in the G1 Classic Cup at Sha Tin.
