Believe You Can wins Kentucky Oaks

Owner-breeder Brereton Jones and trainer Larry Jones combined to win another G1 Kentucky Oaks with Believe You Can at Churchill Downs on Friday.

Believe You Can (3f Proud Citizen – El Fasto by El Prado) survived a duel with Grace Hall before fending off a late challenge from Broadway’s Alibi.  She went into the Oaks on the back of wins in the LR Silverbulletday Stakes and G3 Fair Grounds Oaks in New Orleans.

Brereton Jones and Larry Jones had won the 2008 Kentucky Oaks with Proud Spell.  Brereton Jones had catalogued this year’s winner for the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale but took her back home after bidding stopped at $70,000.

Her sire Proud Citizen (Gone West) was a G2 winner of the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and then finished second to War Emblem in the 2002 Kentucky Derby.  He was third home in the Preakness Stakes before suffering a fractured shin in the Belmont Stakes.

Brereton Jones stands Proud Citizen at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky.  His current crop of three year-olds also includes Went the Day Well who earned a start in this year’s Kentucky Derby with a G3 victory in the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park in March.
