Astute buys at Magic Millions

Astute Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Louis Le Metayer can look back on a ground-breaking season with his purchases from the Gold Coast Magic Millions.

Le Metayer launched Astute Bloodstock after stints with Lindsay Park and Arrowfield and one of his first buys – My Country – won the LR Lancaster Stakes (1100m) at Eagle Farm in June.

The Poet’s Voice filly will be set for the G1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.  “She was our favourite filly at the Magic Millions last year despite a light pedigree,” Le Metayer recalled.  “Thanks to Peter James and his friends, we were able to purchase her for $140,000.”

Co-trainer Peter Snowden has a good opinion of My Country.  “She’s got quite a bit of ability,” he said.  “She’s a progressive filly and is nominated for all the nice races as a spring three-year-old.”

Le Metayer began the year with Street Cry colt Wolf Cry who won the $250,000 Magic Millions Maiden in January.  He was purchased for a syndicate that includes Laurie Macri, Rob McClure, James Bester, John Murray and Bob Scarborough.

Magic Diamond (Not a Single Doubt) also weighed in with a maiden win at Kembla Grange in March.  She was a $100,000 Astute Bloodstock buy and had been an unlucky fourth in the G3 Kindergarten Stakes at Randwick last year.

Le Metayer selected another two beautifully-bred yearlings to be trained by Team Hawkes at this year’s Magic Millions.  First-up was the Pierro colt from LR Carrington Stakes winner No Looking Back (Redoute’s Choice) for $380,000.

He was joined by the Charge Forward filly out of Canterbury winner Xandretta (Flying Spur) for $200,000.  The dam is a half-sister to G1 Champagne Stakes winner Carry On Cutie.

Le Metayer was one of three bloodstock agents admitted as members of Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) along with Mark Pilkington and Dave Mee in June.

Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia (FBAA) was formed in 1998 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, status and services of bloodstock agents throughout Australia.  Its members operate with the utmost integrity and professionalism and are bound by the strict Industry Code of Conduct.
