Arrowfield Singles out Squamosa

Not A Single Doubt clinched a Top 5 spot in the Australian second-season sires’ premiership when Squamosa spreadeagled his rivals in the Schweppes Hcp at Randwick on Saturday.

The Arrowfield sire hasn’t had a million-dollar winner among his three year-olds this season unlike Fastnet Rock (Wanted), High Chaparral (So You Think) or Shamardal (Faint Perfume).  His leading earner has been Doubtful Jack who contributed just 15% of the total prizemoney this season.

One thing the Not A Single Doubts do possess is the ability to win and then win again.  Squamosa is typical of the breed.  He won on debut at Randwick on July 7 and returned to headquarters to make it two-from-two on Saturday.

Squamosa is trained by Gai Waterhouse and will be one of the favourites for the STC Golden Rose at Rosehill on August 28.  The stable has a strong line-up in the first Group 1 of the season with Brightexpectations, More Strawberries and Crossbow also heading for the $1 million event.

Waterhouse was her usual ebullient self after the colt spaced the placegetters by six lengths.  And jockey Nash Rawiller said the winner still had lengths in reserve.

“Nash sat outside the leader and then went click, click, click – how far do I win by?” Waterhouse said.  “He’s a really good horse in the making.”

Rawiller said Squamosa, who was also a dominant winner on a wet Kensington track on debut earlier in the month, still appeared to have more up his sleeve.

Rawiller was very keen on the colt after his debut win on the Kensington track and he confirmed that verdict second up.  “He just towed me to the front,” he said.  “He’s got a future.”

Squamosa (2c Not A Single Doubt – Class Success by Success Express) was a $140,000 buy from the Arrowfield draft at the 2009 Gold Coast  Magic Millions.  His dam was a Listed winner in New Zealand and in Australia at Moonee Valley.

Squamosa is the latest Not A Single Doubt to double up in town.  Since the start of June, he has sired the multiple city winners Doubleful Jack (Flemington – twice), No Hesitation (Rosehill – twice) and Spirited Eagle (Sandown & Moonee Valley).

Not A Single Doubt stands alongside his own sire Redoute’s Choice at Arrowfield and is available at a $13,750 (inc gst) service fee this year.
