Platelet made it back-to-back Group 1 victories at Morphettville in the G1 Goodwood (1200m) on Saturday.
A last start winner of the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes, she came from a midfield position with a strong run down the centre of the track to record a half-length win.
Platelet (4m Strategic – Bloodline by Dracula) became the fourth mare in a row to claim the feature sprint following Velocitea (2010), Lone Rock (2011) and Black Caviar last year. Champion sprinter Takeover Target is the last male to win the G1 Goodwood in 2009.
The winner’s sire Strategic now has four winners at the elite level following Meurice, Mistegic and Strategic News. He will stand at Darley’s Northwood Park base for a $5,500 (inc gst) fee this year.
Platelet is trained at Ballarat by Darren Weir. “I haven’t done that much with her since the Sangster Stakes,” he said. “She’s in the form of her life but a trip to Brisbane is probably asking too much.”
Weir also prepared her older half-sister What A Beauty (Octagonal) to four wins in Melbourne and the Victorian provincials. She was retired last year and is foal to Strategic.
Their dam Bloodline sold for just $6,000 as part of the Woodlands Stud dispersal in 2008. She has a yearling filly by Bianconi and is in foal to Authorized.
