Admiral ships to spring carnival in Melbourne

Visiting Mossman sprinter Admiral will launch his latest campaign in the LR Village Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield this Wednesday.

Trainer Barry Campbell will bring his stable star across from Tasmania for a first look at Caulfield following a barrier trial win at Devonport last Tuesday.  “I couldn’t be happier – he pulled up a treat after the trial,” Campbell said.  “I’m not sure whether it will be a hit-and-run mission or whether he will stay in Melbourne.”

In his previous two trips to Melbourne, Admiral was fourth in the G1 Australian Guineas last year and runner-up to Group 1 galloper Supido back at Flemington in May.

Admiral has won 13 of his 21 starts and has not been beaten in Tasmania since the 2015 Newmarket Hcp in Launceston.  He’s expected to return home in time to make amends in this year’s edition on November 16.

Mossman icon Buffering is also in Melbourne for the G1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Friday week, October 21.

The champion sprinter was last seen finishing fifth in the G1 Moir Stakes (1000m) when attempting to win that race for the fourth time.  “I wasn’t disappointed and partly blamed himself for the defeat,” trainer Rob Heathcote admitted.  “I was a little bit soft on him after his super trial in Brisbane and he was only three lengths behind a possible superstar in Extreme Choice.”

Heathcote also prepares Mossman’s last-start maiden winner No Annamossity who is a three-quarter brother to Buffering.  The 3yo gelding was racing for just the second time when he broke through in the Veuve Society QTIS Hcp (1200m) at Eagle Farm on October 3.

No Annamossity is the latest foal from Hussyanna (Hussonet) and she has a perfect record with Mossman.  Their first foal Brazen Moss has been a consistent money-spinner for a Triple Crown syndicate and he won again at Doomben on Saturday.  Their second Reneged claimed the Grafton Guineas in July.

Mossman stands for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee at Vinery.
