Winning Sydney double for Spendthrift Farm

Redoute’s Choice colts Redouble and Swear launched Spendthrift Farm’s Australian racing operation with a winning double in Sydney last week.

Redouble scored a landmark first win sporting the blue and orange silks of Spendthrift owner B Wayne Hughes in the Ranvet Maiden Plate (1200m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.  Stablemate Swear was just as impressive claiming the Claret Stakes (1200m) first-up at Hawkesbury on Saturday.

The Team Hawkes trained stablemates were part of Spendthrift’s first foray at last year’s sales.  Redouble cost $200,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions and Swear was a $725,000 buy at the Inglis Easter Sale.

Stable representative Tania Rouse said Swear and Redouble will take a lot of improvement out of their debut wins.  “Both horses are still mentally and physically immature,’’ Rouse said.  “Redouble is a stronger colt, he’s a different build to Swear but they are very similar in temperament – lovely colts with good attitudes and very easy to deal with at home.”

A decision on whether they remain in training and head to the Brisbane winter carnival will be made when John Hawkes returns from Hong Kong next week.

“We bought 8 yearlings last year and this year,” Spendthrift’s Australia manager Garry Cuddy said.  “It’s very exciting to have two very promising city winners already this season and, hopefully, there are more in store.”

Spendthrift’s service fees for its Australian farm at Romsey will be announced in the near week or two.  It’s inaugural roster last year comprised Can the Man (Into Mischief), Hampton Court (Redoute’s Choice), Jimmy Creed (Distorted Humor) and Warrior’s Reward (Medaglia d’Oro).
