Turffontein Champion 2YO sire in Victoria

Blue Gum Farm sire Turffontein has won his second Victorian 2YO premiership with earnings of $590,890 in 2014-15.  He had also claimed the Victorian 2YO premiership and first-season title in 2013-14.

Group 2 flag-bearers Fontein Ruby and Fontiton have headlined his first two crops.

“Turffontein himself was a nice two year old,” Blue Gum owner Philip Campbell recalled.  “He had three starts and won over 1200 metres at Rosehill and placed in the other two.  What he did after that initial year of racing was to train on and be a really exceptional racehorse.

“It’s very exciting to see Turffontein win Victoria’s two year old titles with his first two crops.  Fontein Ruby, from his first crop, trained on to be a cracking good three year old in the season just completed.

“Now he has the likes of Fontiton, Safariann and Faint Blaze going into their second year of competition.  And he has a lovely third crop about to start competing as two year olds.”

Fontein Ruby was named Super VOBIS Horse of the Year for 2014-15.  The Robert Smerdon trained filly won more than $1 million during a short but highly successful career that ended when she fractured a sesamoid bone in May.

Turffontein sired her from a three-quarter sister to G1 Cox Plate hero Fields of Omagh.  Blue Gum Farm will stand him for an $11,000 (inc gst) fee this year.
