Telepathic targets Queensland Oaks

Mossman’s golden run could have a surprise sting at the tail-end of the season in Brisbane.

The Vinery sire’s New Zealand filly Telepathic tipped her hand for the G1 Queensland Oaks with an impressive win at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Telepathic (3f Mossman – Telepathy by Conatus) settled back in field and then produced a strong finish to run away with the Lindauer 3YO Stakes (1200m).  “The inside runners took me wider than I wanted,” visiting jockey Michelle Payne said.  “But she won it like a really promising horse.”

The Mossman filly broke her maiden at Avondale in October and then finished fifth in the G2 Eight Carat Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day before she pulled a shoe and stood on a nail.

“I didn’t think she would win first-up today,” co-trainer Dean Logan said.  “She’s ahead of herself now.”

The Gerry Harvey homebred hails from the famed Eight Carat family and Logan is keen to get her on a flight to Australia.  “I would like to think she can kick on and hopefully end up in Brisbane,” he said.  “We’ve always had a big opinion of this filly – early on we thought she was right up there with Rising Romance.”

Logan and his wife Donna have their G2 Royal Stakes winner Rising Romance thriving in advance of the G1 ATC Oaks at Randwick next Saturday.  Bookmakers have the Ekraar filly on the second line of betting at $6.

The Ruakaka couple will then target another Group 1 with Telepathic in the $400,000 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on May 31.

Mossman’s career-best season started with Buffering’s Group 1 hat-trick in the Manikato Stakes, VRC Sprint and Winterbottom Stakes.  More Group 1 triumphs followed courtesy of his fillies Miss Mossman (NZ Oaks) and Mossfun (Golden Slipper).

The Vinery sire is embedded in the Top 5 on the Australian sires’ premiership in 2013-14.  His season earnings reached $7.05 million on Saturday when Buffering was placed in the G1 T J Smith Stakes at Randwick.
