Anthony Mithen has added to his Tavistock collection with the purchase of well-bred mare Galaktika (NZ).
The Rosemont Stud owner paid $405,000 for the half-sister to Tavistock’s Group 1 winner Volkstok’n’barrell at the NZB National Sale in Karaka. Galaktika (Thorn Park) won at Te Rapa and Ellerslie for trainers Donna & Dean Logan before being covered by Tavistock last year.
Mithen is a part-owner of Volkstok’n’barrell who won the G1 Rosehill Guineas last year and is among the chances in the G1 Doomben Cup next Saturday. He also bought a share and the standing rights to G1 Victoria Derby winner Tarzino who is also by boom Cambridge Stud sire Tavistock.
“Galaktika will stay in New Zealand and return to Tavistock,” Mithen said. “We have a couple of nominations to Tavistock and in time she will to go to Tarzino.”
Volkstok’n’barrell was a last-start third in the Hollindale Stakes and Mithen is looking forward to the winter carnival. “It was an excellent run given he was probably not fully wound up. He missed a gallop during the week and to come from last was very encouraging. I think he’s back in a big way so it’s really exciting going into the Doomben Cup.”
