Last Saturday’s Flemington winner Super Haze looks a good buy for Louis Le Métayer’s Astute Bloodstock (FBAA).

And if trainer Tony McEvoy is any judge, the Banjo Paterson Final (2600m) won’t be the Irish import’s last victory at headquarters. “We thought a fair bit of this horse but he lost his way early this year,” McEvoy said. “But that was his true form today.

“He loves the galloping room at Flemington and was unlucky not to win a race on Melbourne Cup day last year.”

Le Métayer bought Super Haze as a foal at an Arqana Deauville Sale in December 2012. He was acting on behalf of a syndicate that includes Nigel Austin (Cotton On Flyers), Wayne Mitchell (Pipeliner Bloodstock) & Anthony Mithen (Rosemont Stud).

Super Haze (High Chaparral – Silver Haze by Pivotal) was bred and sold by Haras d’Etreham for €62,000 (AUD 76,575). His dam is a half-sister to German-bred Seville (Galileo) who was runner-up in the 2011 Irish Derby prior to emigrating out here to win a G1 Metropolitan for Lloyd Williams.

Calypso Bay was another High Chaparral in Le Métayer’s sights at the 2014 NZB Karaka yearling sale. Purchased for Queensland-based owners Ron & Judy Wanless, he won at Canterbury last month and the dominance of that victory indicates he has a very bright future.
